Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps; for he is the only animal that is (stuck in) the difference between what things are and what they ought to be. ~William Hazlitt
Soulstuck is the condition we find ourselves in, whether individually or in community where we have built a life, a family, a community, a business… but there is no heart, no soul, no connection to something greater than ourselves.
Soulstuck is where we find ourselves when we have done all we can do to make something as good as we can, but we still feel an emptiness, a longing, a desire to transcend what we have made.
Soulstuck is how you feel when you think all is lost, when nothing seems to work anymore, when you’ve reached the end of your rope and you look up to see only clouds and rain….and you feel alone.
Soulstuck is when your people look to you to lead and you know you’ve got nothing left to give them.
Soulstuck is reaching into your heart and realizing that everything the culture around you has told you is a lie.
Soulstuck is when you realize that you cannot follow your heart because it eventually will take you into a place where you are stuck and unsatisfied and lost.
Soulstuck is when your eyes are opened to your true condition and all the scaffolding that you used to build your life, your family, your business, your community is now gone and you are left with what you have constructed.
This message is for you.
Are you soulstuck?
If you are human like me, then the answer is a resounding yes.
When I was 18 years old, I went into a cloud. I didn’t realize it at that age, but something happened to me during that 18-22 year old time period while I was in college. I thought that I knew everything about life, success, religion, dating…the list goes on.
But for some reason I didn’t want to listen to the voice of reason. I had my mind set on things that I believed and I just thought that I had all the tools in my toolkit for life that I needed. I made it through college, got married, and began my life…and everything was as it should be.
Then, from out of nowhere, my dreams were dashed. I lost my job. I lost my dream. My wife and I were forced to move in with family.
And then I woke up.
The clouds lifted, reality set in, and I began to see my life not as a destination, but a journey. This one simple realization created in me a whole lot of anxiety and fear. But as I journeyed through life with my wife and now our four children, I began to see that life is not all about me. Life is not a problem to be solved but an adventure to be lived. Times got tough and circumstances changed, but I woke up. And after that happened, everything changed.
The awakening, for us, needs to happen.
Everyone is soulstuck. Say it to yourself.
EVERYONE is soulstuck. Don’t deny it. Embrace it. And your adventure will begin.
Permission to dream again.
My goal with soulstuck is to take you on a journey. This journey will take you into the depths of your soul as an individual, as a family, as a community, or even as a business. I want to give you permission to dream again, to live again, to find the heart in your family, your business, your community…again.
Journey is story. And so I hope to tell lots of stories. Maybe you will share your story with the rest of us as well. I also hope to extract some usable principles out of these stories we share so that we can find our way back to the way things ought to be.
As we journey together, I want to leave you with these two questions:
How are you soulstuck?
What are you going to do about it?
