” Strictly speaking one ought to say that the Church is always in a state of crisis and that its greatest shortcoming is that it is only occasionally aware of it…. This ought to be the case because of the abiding tension between the church’s essential nature and its empirical condition…. That there were so many centuries of crisis-free existence for the Church was therefore an abnormality… And if the atmosphere of crisislessness still lingers on in many parts of the West, this is simply the result of a dangerous delusion. Let us also know that to encounter crisis is to encounter the possibility ofRead More →

“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.  For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?” Luke 9:23-25 Following I’m following Jesus. I may not always look like it. I may not always say or do the things He says to say or do… But to the best of my ability, I’m following Him.   His way is notRead More →

A lot has been said about church being “missional”… I’m sure you’ve heard this word used to describe things… as far as words go, the overuse of this word to describe churches that are everything but missionary-sending bodies has formed a lot of contempt in the minds of many in church leadership. You can’t “go missional” or “try being missional” like it’s some kind of fad or passé new methodology.   As if this “missional” talk is just a new buzzword like “discipleship” in the church, leaders go to conferences to come back and try implementing what they’ve seen or heard someone else do inRead More →

Sometimes my ignorance about the plight of people gets the best of me. While I often hold conservative beliefs politically… sometimes My arrogance and lack of awareness causes me to make ignorant statements that on the surface may be justified, but in reality I am using that as a cover for selfishness and whim, pretending to be righteous just because I am ‘legal.’  “No more pretending. You can’t use legal cover to mask a moral failure.” ‭‭Matthew 5:32 (msg) The issue of immigration is more complex than we all are willing to admit. If fear is keeping us from taking a hard look at whatRead More →

Every battle has casualties. That’s just the reality of it. But we must begin living life from a different perspective or else we will never see the reality of a life in the Kingdom of Heaven. That life is counter-intuitive… in other words… it doesn’t make sense. But Jesus never called us to an existence that we could control, make comfortable, or live in self-made castles with security systems… He called us to live in faith. Read More →

I wonder if “obedience” is the wrong word to use when we talk about what it means to follow Jesus.    Obedience is only the beginning part. Once you walk with Jesus for a while, it’s not about being obedient anymore. Christ just compels you. It’s impulsive and intuitive.   When you live in relationship to him well, the walk becomes a joy not a drudgery. I’m not living the way I’m living out of obedience as much as out of a genuine recognition that apart from Him I can do nothing. My motives have changed. I’ve experienced his love and grace so much thatRead More →
