“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?”
I’m following Jesus.
I may not always look like it.
I may not always say or do the things He says to say or do…
But to the best of my ability, I’m following Him.
His way is not easy. In fact, following him will probably lead you into places you never thought you’d have to go. You’ll have to sacrifice some personal fulfillment along the way. But that’s ok.
What Jesus gives you in return for the laying of your own desires down is worth far greater value than anything you can achieve on your own.
Following Jesus doesn’t necessarily mean becoming like the church. Sometimes…in fact many times… the church doesn’t look much like him. But don’t let the church be your excuse not to find other people who are following Jesus and join them where they are.
I’m sure if enough time and light were exposing your faults, you’d have plenty of them as well.
The church isn’t Jesus. So don’t follow it. Follow Him. And belong to His family, that is the church.
We are struggling along just as you are, trying to figure out what following Him looks like. We honestly don’t know the answer to that sometimes. We get it wrong a lot. But that’s why Jesus gave us a little thing called “grace”. In actuality, grace isn’t a little thing. It’s a pretty big deal. And that’s way cool.
Follow Jesus when you don’t feel like it.
Follow Jesus when you do.
Follow Jesus as He creates His kingdom in the hearts of people.
Let Him set up residence in your heart too. But don’t be surprised if you let Him in if He decides to ask you to rearrange a few things in your life. He’s demanding like that. Yep… He loves you just the way you are… but things are going to change if you invite him in.
Follow Him even when it hurts. Follow Him, even when it doesn’t make sense. Trust Him. He knows you better than you know yourself.
And most of all… don’t stop following Him.
Life isn’t about waiting around for Jesus to come back… In a sense… He’s already here. He’s living inside of us telling us to go, telling us to be His, to love people, to serve our city, to make peace, to invite the stranger in, to comfort the dying, the hurting, the broken and destitute. Following Jesus looks a lot like giving up your rights to yourself. That’s a difficult thing in this culture.
But it’s totally worth it.
Just Follow Him. And follow me as I follow Him.
Wanna come with?
