“As Jesus’ disciple, I am his apprentice in kingdom living. I am learning from him how to lead my life in the Kingdom of the Heavens as he would lead my life if he were I.”
FREE THIS MONTH
This month’s Free Soulstuck Resource is a little ebook I created called:
Apprentice: 7 Studies on How to Follow Jesus.
Here at soulstuck.com I want to encourage all people who come by the site to seriously investigate and consider what you are going to do with the person of Jesus Christ. Not only do I believe He is everything He claimed to be…but I realize that many people do not recognize or know what his central message was when He came to earth.
Much has been said over the years about Christianity being about “relationship not religion”… and I would echo that thought. However, as with all meaningful phrases, this phrase has lost some of its luster through overuse. I believe that relationship may not be strong enough a word.
Jesus was interested in leading people to God and walking beside them as they went. This was more than just a relationship, this was an apprenticeship. There is a task to be done, a trade to be learned, and a mission to be accomplished. Relationship for relationship’s sake is not enough.
A few years ago, I was introduced to the writings and thoughts of Dallas Willard, a philosophy professor at UCLA, and a Christian. He was the first I had ever read who had set forth the concept of a Christian as an “apprentice of Jesus”.
I’d heard the word “disciple” all my life and, it too had become an all too familiar word for me in the world of church. But apprentice seemed to carry with it much more of an understandable meaning in this day and age. In my mind, I could see a Master blacksmith teaching his underling, his apprentice the tools and the skills of the trade. Walking beside the Master, the apprentice was able to learn and develop a mastery over the trade he or she was learning. Jesus teaches as he walks with us. He models behavior, speech, and life for us and offers us entrance into the kingdom way of life, this counter-intuitive process of becoming more like Jesus and less like yourself.
This is the way of the follower of Jesus. We do not merely listen to sermons and messages, but we take on the mantle of apprenticeship to the Master of Life, Jesus.
I wrote 7 studies introducing the concept of apprenticeship to Jesus and compiled them into this little ebook. I encourage you, if you have not already, subscribe to this blog for free by entering your name and email into the “Subscribe Here” box at the top right of this page (or at the bottom). When you do, I’ll send you a welcome email that includes a free download link to the study.
If you are interested in learning how to walk alongside God in an apprenticing/mentoring relationship, I encourage you to subscribe and get your free copy. I also want to encourage you to find someone who can read along or walk alongside you as you go through the 7 studies. You can do them all in one week, or you can just do one every week for 7 weeks. Whichever way you choose to do it, the point is that you begin the learning process.
This is a great tool for someone who is brand new to the faith to begin learning how to walk in a mentoring relationship with the Master, Jesus. It’s also great as a beginning primer on what it means to be an apprentice to Jesus.
